OUR MISSION
“To perpetuate Scottish culture in Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin”
Upon the bicentennial of the United States of America in 1976, a great awakening occurred across the country. Many Americans became interested in their heritage of whence their ancestors came. Americans in Duluth were no different – a resurgence of Scottish heritage occurred and in 1976, members of the community founded the Duluth Scottish Heritage Association (DSHA).
The DSHA perpetuates Scottish culture in the region through its Highland Dance teachings, Twin Ports Highlanders Pipes & Drums band, and through various modern and traditional Scottish events celebrated each year.
EVENTS
The “Kirkin’ O’ the Tartans” and “Robert Burns night” are two traditional Scottish events celebrated. The Kirkin’ service goes back as far as the post-Jacobean era in the mid 1700’s following the battle of Culloden. The Robert Burns night celebration is held each year, celebrating the birthday of the Bard himself, Rabbie Burns. This event occurs worldwide and has been around for decades.
The DSHA also holds an annual Remembrance Day to remember Scots in the area, an annual Highland Dance competition, Spring Concert and more.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Scottish heritage had once been prominent in Duluth throughout the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s with the presence of Clan Stewart OSC #50 (Order of Scottish Clans). Many Scots immigrated to the region and founded the Clan Stewart OSC, celebrating many Scottish traditions with family, friends and those interested in Scottish Heritage. Through the decades, many Clan Stewart members moved out of the area, or passed away, and the organization eventually became defunct.
GOVERNANCE
The DSHA is a designated 501c3 public charity per Internal Revenue Service Standards and is run by a board of directors consisting of the following make-up.
